How we keep children safe

Most of the people who learn with biqib are children, and every parent deserves to know how they are looked after. This page sets it out in plain words. Everything here is what the app does today.

If anything is unclear, or you would like to talk about it, please write to us at info@biqib.com. We would be glad to hear from you.

What we do

Your child learns with an AI, not a person. The app calls it the AI Tutor wherever it appears, and it answers from your child's own textbook.

A parent or guardian agrees first

Before a child's first question, answer paper or payment slip is sent, the child and a parent or guardian read a short note together about what happens to the work, and the parent or guardian agrees by name. If the words change, we ask again.

Young children's accounts are held by a parent

Up to Grade 5, a parent or guardian holds the account and signs in. From Grade 6 it can be handed to the child, and the parent keeps sight of it until Grade 8.

A tutor that stays a tutor

The tutor has guardrails: it refuses messages that try to change its instructions or turn it into something other than a tutor, and kindly asks the child to ask about their subject instead.

Help with homework, never the answers

For homework from school, the tutor explains the idea with an example of its own from the textbook and does not work through the exact problem. Your child does the work, and can then have their own answers checked.

The AI can be wrong, and teachers come first

Like any AI, the tutor and the marking can make mistakes: an explanation can contain an error, and a mark can be unfair. Your child's teachers come first. Please think of biqib as a patient helper at home, and check anything important with the teacher at school.

Where the work goes

To answer a question or mark a page, the schoolwork is sent to AI services run by other companies: language models, paid and free, some of which also read photographs of handwritten work. They may process it outside Sri Lanka, and a free service may keep what it receives. We choose which services to use, and may change them over time. What we never send with the work is who your child is: no name, school, email or phone number. We also ask children to send only schoolwork, and to keep personal details out of their questions and photos.

Payment slips are never sent to an AI. Only the school's staff look at them, to find the payment.

Read the privacy policy

Sri Lanka's data protection law

Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022, sets out how personal data, children's included, must be looked after. We work to follow it: a child's work is used to teach them and to show their progress, and you can ask for it to be deleted at any time. We do not claim any certification, and our privacy policy says plainly that it has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer.

Tell us about a concern

If something the tutor said worried you, if you think a child may be at risk, or if you would like your child's work or account deleted, please write to info@biqib.com. We read every message ourselves and will answer as soon as we can. There is no need to include a child's full details in the first message; we will ask for only what we need.
